What is a Torrent File?
A torrent file is a file that contains metadata and is shared on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks over the Internet.
A torrent file does not actually contain the media itself, but rather it helps a torrent software search for computers that are sharing the file.
Once it is located, the software connects to the computers to copy documents, photos, movies, music, ebooks, applications, software, and games.
Users will oftentimes store these files on their Plex Media Server.
A torrent file helps users search for needed information and the address of computers that have uploaded the content. Remember that the index contains the information but not the file itself.
The sharing of torrent files happens on a peer-to-peer (P2P) network with computers called peers. This activity is known as seeding.
The more seeders there are, the faster the download will be. When numerous sources contain the same file, a client can download small portions of it at the same time.
If you decide to participate in downloading and using torrent files it’s important to understand the risks and protect yourself online.
How to Protect Yourself When Torrenting
As mentioned previously throughout this guide, using a VPN is a MUST when downloading and opening torrent files.
This will hide your IP address and protect your online identity from hackers, website operators, developers, your ISP, and more.
In fact, if you decide to download torrent files with your IP address exposed to the public, you may receive a notice in the mail that looks similar to the image below.
We’ve also seen instances in the past where operators of torrent websites will hand over user data to authorities, which includes IP addresses and emails.
